Somewhen in the Pleistocene, Edward is a highly intelligent and enterprising hominid: he rules his clan by making big innovations as fire, cooked meat, bows and exogamous marriages. His outspoken promotion of modernization, however, bothers his brother Vania, a staunch conservative, and at the end will alienate him from his whole family, sentencing Edward to a sad fate.
