Jeffrey Warren "Jeff" Daniels (born February 19, 1955) is an American actor and musician. He founded a non-profit theatre company, the Purple Rose Theatre Company, in his home state of Michigan. He has performed in a number of stage productions, both on and off Broadway. He has been nominated for the Tony Award as Best Actor for the Broadway play God of Carnage (2009), along with his other three cast-mates. He has had a thriving film career, from his debut in 1981 in Ragtime, through State of Play in 2009. For his film work, he has received three Golden Globe Award nominations, including as Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy/Musical for Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) (hence the name of his theatre company). He has also received nominations by the Screen Actors Guild, Satellite Awards, and several for his work in The Squid and the Whale (London Critics Circle Awards, Independent Spirit Awards, Chlotrudis Awards and Gotham Awards).

Film opens with 5 friends, Isaiah, Malachi “Mal”, Rodney, Clarence, and Kurt, meeting up at their favorite pub. Through their lively conversations, we learn about their personal lives and struggles: Isaiah's father is sick and his time is coming to end. Mal is anxiously preparing for the arrival of his first child, trying to balance his excitement and fears about fatherhood. Rodney has just gotten engaged and dream about future with his fiancée. Clarence has recently been promoted, finally achieved his dream career and is supported by his gf. Kurt is preparing to open his own bar, and start a new life with son. They share laughs, advice, and their hopes for the future. The pub serves as a symbol of their enduring friendship. Their world is shattered when news breaks that Russia sent nuclear weapon on France. The government declares a state of emergency, and able-bodied men are drafted to defend their country. The friends have a week to prepare for their departure. They spend these precious days with their loved ones. The pub becomes their sanctuary once more as they gather for one last evening together. The war is hell. After some time they returns home. Not all of them, Mal is determined to be missing. They decided to come back and save him. Mal is imprisoned and helps 5 other soldiers to survive. They will rescue him and Kurt will fall in love again when is shot and healed by nurse. Film ends with heartfelt meeting with love ones at home and cancer of Phil is in remission.
