Zero the Jackal has had a rough life before becoming a mercenary. His father Liam was rude, brutal, basically the bad-father type. What Surge got in physical pain was multiplied in emotional pain. But the thing is, Zero was raised in a family of criminals, so it was generational. When Eggman hired him the first time, he didn't say no. His team is more than a team. They're his actual family. Trois was his bride-to-be when somehow the alarm went off when they were pulling off the Phantom Ruby heist. Zero had lost everyone he held most dear, including her. After losing to Shadow, he volunteered to Eggman's experiment with the very gem he was hired to steal, becoming Infinite.
