A biopic of the Beach Boys starting with the disastrous Smile Sessions in 1967 and ending with Dennis Wilson's death in 1982, focusing on the turmoil of the 1970s. It's a sprawling ensemble drama closer to Boogie Nights or Oppenheimer than a traditional biopic. There's plenty of great music and performing scenes, but also family trauma, the counterculture, the Manson murders, rock stardom, losing fame, addiction, and the death of the California dream. The story is told primarily from Dennis Wilson's point of view.
