Orphaned after his criminal father was imprisoned and his drug-addicted mother died, Jason Todd wandered the streets stealing car parts for cash. Caught by Batman attempting to steal the Batmobile's wheels, Batman took Jason in and trained him as the second Robin, though Jason frequently disobeyed orders and had an explosive temper. Jason was later brutally beaten by the Joker and killed in an explosion before being revived by a Lazarus Pit. Becoming the vigilante the Red Hood, Jason freely killed criminals and clashed with Batman over ideals. The two managed to reach a truce and agreed to work together again, on the condition that Jason doesn't kill.
