Jim Gordon Sr had the ideal life, he was married, with a 13 year old daughter and a 10 year old son, had recently been promoted to police commissioner, but then his son was diagnosed with schizophrenia and had begun having violent outbursts. A year later his wife left them. His daughter is now living in fear of her brother and then it gets worse when a couple years after their mom leaves, Jim Gordon Jr attacks his sister Barbara with a kitchen knife and sends her to the Er. Jim Gordon Sr makes the tough decision to send his seven year old son off to a mental institution (not Arkham). He is already allies with Batman at this point.
