The Ambitious Gorefield is a 2022 American action horror film written, directed and edited by James Wan and produced by Guillermo del Toro. Based on the SCP Foundation character Gorefield, the film features an ensemble cast consisting of Mackenzie Davis, Tom Kenny, Ryan Gosling, Javier Bardem, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Laurence Fishburne, and Ewan McGregor. The Ambitious Gorefield was released on March 7th, 2022; Wan decided to read about the character before the film's release, and had all cast members read about him as well. It received generally negative reviews from critics, who criticized the plot, runtime, crude humor, screenplay, direction and the overstylized gore, but the visual effects, action sequences, editing, score and performances (particularly from Kenny, Davis, and Fishburne) were praised. Despite the negative response, the film was a box-office success, earning $526 million worldwide, though it was the highest grossing film to win 3 Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Picture; Worst Director and Worst Screenplay. It won 5 Academy Awards, including Best Visual Effects; Best Sound; Best Editing; Best Musical Score; and Best On-screen Couple for Davis and Kenny. A sequel, directed by del Toro replacing Wan, is in development, with all of the cast returning, and Wan returning as the editor.
