Vandekeybus provides the film's more avant-garde physical language, particularly for Johnny's appearances and V's deteriorating mental state. His choreography makes Johnny feel unpredictable and physically alien, with fractured, aggressive movements that blur the boundary between hallucination, memory and reality. As V and Johnny become increasingly intertwined, elements of Johnny's movement begin to appear in V's own body language and eventually bleed into the action.
Tharp handles the film's major action sequences, giving them a kinetic, physical and deliberately unpredictable quality. Rather than polished choreography, fights feel messy, inventive and constantly on the verge of going wrong, complementing Gilliam's absurdist visual humour. Her choreography grows increasingly extravagant as the film progresses, culminating in the chaotic, surreal action of the final act.
