Edward Nigma showed signs of his genius intellect from a very young age, and his mother pushed him too far, making him spend all of his time on school or tests that she made up, putting an unbearable amount of stress on the young Edward. But when his father realized how much smarter his son was than himself, he beat his son out of envy, leading Edward to believe that he had to be the smartest there is and that everybody else should be jealous of his genius. This need to be the best is what lead him to become an enemy of Batman, seeing the Dark Knight as his one true intellectual rival, The Riddler created elaborate traps and crimes to outsmart the caped crusader and prove his superiority.
