During an exploration in a Louisiana swamp, Jason Woodrue spots a humanoid creature. Intrigued by the discovery, Woodrue contacts his employer, Avery Sunderland. Equally intrigued, Sunderland decides to seize the creature for himself. Abby Arcane, a researcher at the CDC is investigating the presence of a virus in the swamp. Abby was investigating alongside Woodrue. However, the true reason for the research is unknown to Abby. The Sunderland Corporation and Argus initiated the investigation into the region due to the disappearance of Alec Holland, who was working on an important project related to the local fauna. The virus emerged around the same time. Abby delves into the swamp, encountering a very strange creature claiming to be Alec. A romance blossoms. After a joint effort to restore Alec's human appearance, the Sunderland Corporation manages to track down Swamp Thing and kill him. Abby escapes. Woodrue then autopsies ST and discovers that he's only superficially human. The creature was not Alec but believed to be. Woodrue concludes that the creature is still alive. He attempts to connect to the Green through ST and becomes Floronic Man. Saved by Abby, ST kills Avery Sunderland and tries to eliminate Woodrue. The latter has just wiped out an entire town in Louisiana. The final revelation is that there have been hundreds of Swamp Things throughout history, each tasked with defending the Parliament of Trees. Swamp Thing and Abby burn the remains of Holland's body.
