The film opens at LexCorp, where Mayor Lex Luthor arms the MPD, desperate to prove himself better than Superman after Metallo’s defeat. Lex can’t shake his insecurity—no matter what, Superman overshadows him. Meanwhile, Clark has withdrawn from Lois and his parents, consumed by Krypton’s history. When he detects a ship in Earth’s atmosphere, he intercepts it, discovering a girl and a dog—Kara and Krypto. Seeing the symbol on his chest, Kara realizes Clark is her cousin, Kal, and warns him that Zod is coming to turn Earth into Krypton. Knowing only Kryptonite can stop Zod, Clark turns to Lex. Hesitant, Lex accepts, hoping victory will make him Earth’s hero. When Zod arrives, Superman is beaten, forcing Kara to hide him with Lois, who reminds Clark he isn’t Krypton’s last son but a farm boy. Inspired, he resolves to fight for Earth. Lex dons his Warsuit, battling Zod but falling short. Reuniting with Clark, Kara, and Lois, he admits his envy—Superman is loved because he’s human at heart. Clark later discovers Jor-El’s true message: he was meant to rule with Zod. Shaken, he chooses hope instead. With Kara and Lex, he challenges Zod, wielding Kryptonite at great cost. In the end, Superman defeats but spares Zod, warning him Earth has defenders. Green Lantern, Hawkman, and Martian Manhunter arrive, proof of a united league. Clark returns to the Kent farm, embracing his true home. Lex names Superman his advisor. In the Fortress, Clark deletes Jor-El’s message—choosing Earth over Krypton.
