(First appeared in Black Lightning #1 in 1977 and was created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden). Jefferson Pierce grew up in the crime-ridden Suicide Slums of Metropolis. His father was killed at an early age and he was raised by a tailor named Peter Gambi. When, he grew up he became a gold medal-winning Olympic athlete and later the principal of Garfield High School. He had upset a local gang called the 100, who, in retaliation, attacked the school and killed a student named Earl Clifford. Jefferson decided to fight back and don a belt that gave him electric-based powers and become the superhero Black Lightning.
