Fox and his team were doing a recon mission when Master Hand attacked and snatched up Star Fox, except for him. So Fox speeds his Arwing into the black hole that took them, and ends up at the Smash fighters' camp. Fox got out and thinks he's on a strange alien world, filled with dangerous creatures (which would be the Smash fighters), and gives Mario, Sonic, Samus and Link a good fight. But when he saw that they were allies, he apologized and humbly said that he just lost his team and is not doing well. Sonic helps him through Fox's separation from his team, seeing that they have so much in common. Then, Fox joins them in hopes of seeing his team again.
