The story begins with of the hero,Riou adoptive grandson of the great Jowston hero,Genkaku,now living in the Highland Kingdom. Serving in the Highland youth army,the hero's regiment is betrayed by Highland prince,Luca Blight in order to manufacture a war with Jowston. Escaping with his best friend,Jowy Atreides, and adoptive sister Nanami,the three soon find themselves embroiled in Jowston's defense against Highland. Jowy rejoins in the Highland Army and as the King of Highland. Nanami tried to convince Riou to quit fighting and run away many times throughout the war,but Riou refused. Eventually,she decided to simply let Riou fight out his war,but secretly she was hurt by the fact that her brother had to fight against friend, Jowy. During the siege on Rockaxe,she is shown to be protective to both Riou and Jowy. Nanami wields her three-piece rod to confront Gorudo and his knights,but she was heavily injured from their arrow shots. This causes the both of them to get angry at them and to kill Gorudo. Riou was informed that Nanami had passed away. Bearing the Bright Shield and Black Sword Runes,the two are destined to oppose each other. Riou forces eventually emerge victorious,but the war will not end until the hero and Jowy meet at Tenzan Pass for one final duel. Riou decides he no longer wishes to lead the Dunan Army,and Jowy uses his second chance at life to atone for his sins as King. The two vow to be together without Nanami died.
