Deputy Sarah Allen is eager to welcome her younger sister Ava's return to their small town of Iris Lake, after the latter's year long roadtrip across the country results in a breakup with her boyfriend. As Ava settles in and makes plans to begin a teaching job at a local music school, Sarah and the rest of the sheriff's department are thrown into an incident involving the sudden discovery of a missing young woman's dead body on the railroad tracks. While this occurs, Ava strikes up a romance with a charming and handsome newcomer to town, Emrys Price. And given how fresh her sister's breakup is, Sarah naturally expresses concern. She wants to believe Emrys is a good guy, so far he's never given her any reason not to think so--he's polite, thoughtful, and seems to have Ava's best interests at heart--everything her former boyfriend hadn't been or done...but she still can't help but feel that there is something incredibly off putting about his behavior. And as she begins to dig deeper into the investigation regarding not only the missing local girl--but the startling disappearances of more girls from neighboring towns--frightening connections are made, and Sarah begins to greatly fear that her sister's life may be in danger.
