After a failed assassination attempt leaves billionaire inventor Tony Stark with a bullet lodged in his heart, he survives only by encasing his chest in a life-support plate and building a high-tech suit of armor. Now dependent on technology to live, Tony must use his new identity as the "Iron Man" to stop the shadowy organization A.I.M. and its grotesque leader MODOK from stealing his armor and using it for world domination. Hunted by the police, betrayed by his company, and hunted by A.I.M.'s cybernetic assassins—including a contortionist, a technopath, and a man with detachable eyes—Tony descends into a brutal, body-horror nightmare where he must confront whether he is still human or has already become a machine.
