Darren Aronofskyย (born February 12, 1969) is an American filmmaker. His films are noted for their surreal, melodramatic, and often disturbing elements, frequently in the form ofย psychological fiction. Over his career, he has received aย Primetime Emmy Award. He has been nominated for several awards including anย Academy Award, aย BAFTA Award, and aย Golden Globe Award.
Aronofsky studied film and social anthropology atย Harvard Universityย before studying directing at theย AFI Conservatory. After completing his senior thesis film,ย Supermarket Sweep, he won several film awards, becoming a National Student Academy Award finalist. In 1997, he founded the film and TV production companyย Protozoa Pictures. His feature film debut, the surrealist psychological thrillerย Piย (1998), earned him the Directing Award at theย Sundance Film Festivalย and anย Independent Spirit Awardย for Best First Screenplay.
Aronofsky then directed the psychological dramaย Requiem for a Dreamย (2000), the romantic fantasy sci-fi dramaย The Fountainย (2006), and the sports dramaย The Wrestlerย (2008), the latter of which earned theย Golden Lionย at theย Venice Film Festival. He directed the psychological dramaย Black Swan(2010), earning him theย Best Director. His later films include the biblical epicย Noahย (2014), the psychological horror filmย Mother!ย (2017) and the dramaย The Whaleย (2022). Aronofsky's filmย Postcard from Earthย (2023) was produced and filmed exclusively for theย Sphereย in the Las Vegas Valley on itsย 16K resolutionย screen.
