Joby Talbotย (born 25 August 1971) is a Britishย composer.ย He has written for a wide variety of purposes and styles, including instrumental and vocal concert music, film and television scores, pop arrangements, and works for dance.ย He is known to sometimes disparate audiences for quite different works.
Prominent compositions include the a cappella choral worksย The Wishing Treeย (2002) andย Path of Miraclesย (2005); orchestral worksย Sneaker Wave (2004),ย Tide Harmonicย (2009),ย Worlds, Stars, Systems, Infinityย (2012) andย Meniscusย (2012); the theme and score for the popularย BBC Twocomedy seriesย The League of Gentlemenย (1999โ2002); silent film scoresย The Lodgerย (1999) andย The Dying Swanย (2002) for theย British Film Institute; film scoresย The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxyย (2005),ย Son of Rambowย (2007) andย Penelopeย (2008).
Works for dance include shorter worksย Chromaย (2006),ย Genusย (2007),ย Fool's Paradiseย (2007), andย Chamber Symphonyย (2012); and four full-length narrative ballet scores, commissioned byย The Royal Ballet, theย National Ballet of Canadaย andย The Australian Ballet,ย Alice's Adventures in Wonderlandย (2011, revived 2012 and 2013),ย The Winter's Taleย (2014),ย Like Water for Chocolate (2022),ย andย Oscarย (2024).
Talbot premiered his first opera in January 2015 withย the Dallas Opera, a one-act work entitledย Everest, with a libretto byย Gene Scheer, which follows three climbers involved in theย 1996 Mount Everest disaster.
