Lori Davis is a clerk at the county courthouse and Sam's friend. They play racquetball, gossip about senile judges, and enjoy each other's company without romantic subtext. Cady identifies her as a pressure point in Sam's life and brutalizes her in her own apartment, leaving her face grotesquely swollen and her sense of safety permanently destroyed. When she refuses to testify—she knows the system too well to trust it—she becomes the film's most damning evidence that the law cannot protect its own. Lori is a person, not a plot device, with her absence echoing through the film's final acts.
