Joel Edgerton (born 23 June 1974) is an Australian actor, director, writer, and producer. He has appeared in the films Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002), Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005), Warrior (2011), Zero Dark Thirty (2012), The Great Gatsby (2013), Black Mass (2015), Loving (2016), It Comes at Night (2017), and Red Sparrow (2018) and The King (2019). In 2015, Edgerton received a nomination for the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing – First-Time Feature Film for The Gift, a psychological horror-thriller film Edgerton wrote, directed, co-produced, and in which he co-starred. Edgerton garnered further critical acclaim for his performance as Richard Loving in the 2016 historical drama Loving, for which he received a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. In 2018, he wrote, directed and starred in the drama Boy Erased, about gay conversion therapy. In 2019, he starred and co-wrote The King.

In this reimagined version of Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, the story shifts its emotional focus away from a forbidden romance and instead centers on the brotherly bond between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi as the Republic edges toward civil war. During a diplomatic summit on Alderaan, political tensions between the Republic and the Separatists are shattered when the cybernetically enhanced Darth Maul launches a devastating attack, revealing that a mysterious third force is manipulating both sides. As Anakin proves his courage but loses his hand in a duel with Maul, Obi-Wan is forced to confront the grief and guilt he has carried since the death of Qui-Gon Jinn, while Palpatine uses the crisis to justify the deployment of the Clone Army and expand his political influence. Following a tracker to Geonosis, Obi-Wan discovers that Count Dooku is not the mastermind everyone believes, but a former Jedi attempting to expose the hidden Sith Lord manipulating the Republic from within. Before the truth can be revealed, Palpatine orders a massive clone assault, igniting the Clone Wars and destroying the last hope for diplomacy. As Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padmé Amidala escape the battlefield, they realize the galaxy is being consumed by darkness, setting the stage for the tragic fall of the Jedi and Anakin's eventual transformation into Darth Vader.
