He can be a serious man but is wise and sometimes fatherly at times with a good sense of humor, he has been accused of hiding his feelings with jokes as he is rather emotionally reserved and known for his cautiousness. Shortly after being assigned to the Endeavour, the space port in which the ship was docked was destroyed by a natural event but somehow the Endeavour was unharmed; since this event he has suffered from a form of agoraphobia wherein he refuses to leave the ship. At first he manages to keep this a secret but eventually his first officer learns of it and then later the crew (threatening his career).
