Meanwhile, brilliant scientist Dr. Otto Octavius leads a groundbreaking energy experiment that ends in catastrophe, fusing him to his mechanical arms and slowly warping his mind. Becoming Doctor Octopus, Otto wages war on the city and targets Spider-Man, whom he blames for his downfall. During a brutal confrontation, Doc Ock deliberately uses Gwen as leverage, leading to her tragic death and devastating Peter.
