Peter has hit his lowest of lows with the death of Gwen Stacy. He feels rage and anger inside of him. During a meteor shower, a meteorite filled with black goo enters earth which Peter finds and it laches on to him. He discovers it makes him more powerful and gives him a better suit, in return for his rage.
Harry, with the death of his father wants revenge on Spider-Man and becomes the New Goblin to stop him. Mary Jane has felt her connection with Peter slipping and that he is acting extremely different than himself.
