Samuel Marshall Raimi (/ˈreɪmi/ RAY-mee; born October 23, 1959) is an American filmmaker. He is best known for writing and directing the Evil Dead trilogy (1981–1992) and directing the Spider-Man trilogy (2002–2007). He also directed Darkman (1990), The Quick and the Dead (1995), A Simple Plan (1998), The Gift (2000), Drag Me to Hell (2009), Oz the Great and Powerful (2013), and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). His films are known for their highly dynamic visual style, inspired by comic books and slapstick comedy. He founded the production companies Renaissance Pictures in 1979 and Ghost House Pictures in 2002. Raimi has also produced several successful television series, including Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (1995–1997), its spin-off Xena: Warrior Princess (1995–2001), and Ash vs Evil Dead (2015–2018) starring longtime friend and collaborator Bruce Campbell, reprising his role in the Evil Dead franchise. Spider-Man Begins is a 2024 American dystopian superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Miguel O'Hara / Spider-Man. Produced by Marvel Studios and Legendary Pictures, it is the first installment in the Spider-Man Multiverse, and the first R-rated Spider-Man film overall. The film was directed by Neill Blomkamp from a screenplay by Sam Raimi and Marc Webb; Spider-Man Begins stars Gabriel Luna as Miguel O'Hara / Spider-Man alongside Jeffrey Wright, Topher Grace, Saoirse Ronan, Daniel Craig, Jude Law, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Donald Glover, Anjelica Huston, and Michael Shannon as Peter Parker. In the film, teenager Miguel O'Hara suffers an accident during an experiment and discovers his spider-like abilities. As an adult, he investigates the crimes of scientist Walker Sloan and realizes that he turned an alternate Eddie Brock into a monster called Anti-Venom. Spider-Man Begins opened in theaters on January 19th, 2024; the film was a financial success, grossing $874 million against a $395 million and a break-even point of $200 million. It was also well-received by critics and audiences, who praised its darker themes compared to previous Spider-Man films, as well as the performances, story, action sequences, visual effects, story, Blomkamp's direction, and the score. A sequel entitled Spider-Man into the Dark Multiverse was released on December 6th, 2026.
