In the 1960s tropical Caribbean nation of Haiti during the reign of François Duvalier in 1966. an African-American doctor Hakeem Lambert who is approached by a pharmaceutical company looking to investigate a drug used in Haitian Vodou to create zombies by an evil Captain Gaston Perrault, a bokor and the chief of the Tonton Macoute secret police who has warned Lambert to leave Haiti after he fell in love with a Haitian doctor Céline Babineaux in the North Coast of Cap-Haitien.
