The Whispered One (most commonly known as Vecna in broader Dungeons & Dragons lore) is an ancient, mortal-born archlich who achieved godhood. He serves as the primary, universe-threatening antagonist of Campaign 1 of the Critical Role web series and the animated show The Legend of Vox Machina.
Before the Calamity, he was a mortal archmage who sought forbidden magic to challenge the gods. Banished for centuries, he plotted his grand return, eventually pulling the strings behind the Briarwoods' takeover of Whitestone to ensure his resurrection. His goal is to eliminate the gods' reign and reshape reality so that no innocent person has to fear death.
As one of the most powerful entities in Exandria, his arsenal includes reality-bending biokinesis, mass resurrection, and telekinesis. Operating through a zealous cult known as the Remnants, he builds his divine power by consuming the devoted belief of his followers. His mastery over dark magic makes him a formidable match for the champions of Vox Machina.
