There are two separate, perhaps opposing, communities. There is an individual who somehow claims membership in both communities. Perhaps they were born in one community but raised in the other, perhaps they have a parent in each, or they are married to someone from the other community, etc. This gives the character a dual identity. It may be that he sees himself as a member of both communities, or he may identify more strongly with one community but potentially claim/be claimed by the other.
