In this version, Matthew became a tax collector because he wanted to prove to everyone that he really was a smart boy while every other kid in school thought he was a freak for his mental disability where he exceeds in intelligence where everyone else failed, and the extra tail. Rome offered him a life where no one can bother him, but they lied to him, having the young fox realize that the Romans cared nothing for him, and his new job made his life worse. But when Jesus called him, to Matthew, it was an escape from being a tax collector hated by everyone, and an entrance into Jesus' ministry.
