The story follows Shrek, a green ogre who retreats to a swamp after enduring a lifetime of fear and ridicule. His isolation is disrupted by homeless fairy-tale characters evicted by the vertically challenged Lord Farquaad. Shrek makes a deal with Farquaad to retrieve the fairy-tale characters' homes in exchange for his own.
