Frankenstein (フランケンシュタイン Furankenshutain), otherwise known as Frankenstein's monster, is a creature from the 1818 horror novel Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley. A kaijin interpretation of the character appears in the 1965 Toho film, Frankenstein vs. Baragon. After the atomic bomb which destroyed Hiroshima irradiated his immortal heart, it slowly regrew into a feral boy, and eventually a giant. Frankenstein became an outcast, blamed for the crimes of the underground monster Baragon and hunted by the JSDF. Ultimately, he confronted and killed the monster before a sudden fissure sent him plummeting into Earth's depths, his fate unknown. Though referenced in The War of the Gargantuas as the ancestor of Sanda, Toho's Frankenstein has not appeared in any media since then. Another version of the character closer to traditional depictions will be included in the Toho/Kadokawa-distributed film The Great Yokai War: Guardians.

It is present day, 25 years after 1999 when the monsters of Monsterland thwarted their last encounter with the space monster King Ghidorah. And after World War II's nuclear warfare had awakened giant monsters from beneath the Earth. Instead of raging war against each other, Mankind united to kill the monsters and avenge the lives of millions in their wrath. Soon after, man was faced with an even larger threat, Aliens. Races of superior beings hellhent on world domination, Man's forces now rely on their powerful giant monsters to save the Earth from anything that threatens to destroy it. One such is the King of the Monsters, the second last surviving member of its kind who first appeared in 1955. Before, he menaced the entirety of Japan but unlike his brethren from 1954 he became an ally to humanity, the hope for a safe and secure future. His name is Godzilla.
