Brilliant but arrogant Kent Nelson was on an archaeological dig with his father when they uncovered the tomb of the ancient Lord of Order Nabu, a powerful being who becomes his mentor. A surge of mystical energy kills Kent’s father, and Nabu takes Kent in, training him in the secrets of magic and the cosmic balance between Order and Chaos, preparing him to become Doctor Fate. At the Tower of Fate, Nelson trains alongside sorcerers including Eric Strauss and librarian Khalid Nassour, slowly mastering spells despite his skepticism. Meanwhile, the zealot Wotan and his followers steal forbidden knowledge to summon the dark entity Mordru, hoping to merge Earth with the Dark Dimension and achieve eternal life. Back in Earth, Nelson reconnects with Inza Nelson, his emotional anchor, who helps him stay grounded as he struggles with the burden of wielding immense power. In the final battle, Doctor Fate confronts Wotan and the forces of Chaos; during the conflict, Nabu is gravely wounded while channeling power through the Helmet of Fate. To stop Mordru, Kent uses a risky spell to trap the Lord of Chaos in a repeating time loop confrontation, forcing a stalemate that saves Earth and restores balance. In the aftermath, as the world recovers and Kent accepts his role as a guardian of magic, Eric Strauss grows disillusioned with how magic has been used and betrays the order, walking away on a darker path.
