Jang Mu-gyeol rules Myeongwol, Neo-Seoul’s underground pleasure-crime district, like a gangster monarch staging an opera. A former singer turned underworld kingpin, he is charming, generous, theatrical, and monstrously cruel. He funds clinics, protects runaways, and feeds the poor, then executes enemies with ritual beauty. Mu-gyeol despises corporations not because they exploit people, but because they make exploitation impersonal. To him, cruelty should have a face, a voice, and a hand holding the knife. He helps Yul when it benefits him, betrays him when the scene demands it, and sees himself as the last human monster in a city being replaced by machine monsters.
