The film is based on William Shakespeare's drama Romeo and Juliet. The film is set in the United States in the mid-1980s. Romeo's parents are members of the Ku Klux Klan, and Juliet's parents are members of the Black Panther Party (a group of black racists and supremacists). They live in a neighbourhood at war with each other every day. They do not know, however, that their children have something in common other than hatred.
