Jonathan Edward Bernthal (/ˈbɜːrnθɔːl/; born September 20, 1976) is an American actor. He came to prominence for portraying Shane Walsh on the AMC horror drama series The Walking Dead (2010–2012; 2018), where he was a starring cast member in the first two seasons. Bernthal achieved further recognition as Frank Castle/The Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in the second season of Daredevil (2016), the spin-off series The Punisher (2017–2019), and the revival series Daredevil: Born Again (2025–present), and Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026). For his recurring guest role as restaurant owner Michael Berzatto in the series The Bear (2022–present), he won a Primetime Emmy Award. James Dalton is a legendary professional bouncer known for his calm demeanor, expert fighting skills, and strict code of conduct. Haunted by the memory of accidentally killing a man in self-defense, Dalton accepts a job from businessman Frank Tilghman to clean up the notorious Double Deuce bar in Jasper, Missouri. Dalton quickly discovers that the Double Deuce's problems go far beyond drunken fights. The town is controlled by ruthless businessman and crime boss Brad Wesley, who uses intimidation, corruption, and violence to control local businesses and citizens. As Dalton reforms the bar and earns the loyalty of his fellow bouncers, he becomes Wesley's biggest obstacle. While Dalton falls in love with local physician Dr. Elizabeth "Doc" Clay, Wesley escalates his campaign against him. With the help of veteran bouncer Wade Garrett, Dalton prepares for a final confrontation that will determine whether Jasper remains under Wesley's control. Years later, Dalton's legacy continues through his son, Shane Tanner. Now a highly skilled DEA agent and former Marine, Shane returns to the world of bars and organized crime when he is sent to investigate drug trafficking connected to a corrupt nightclub owner. Following in his father's footsteps but determined to forge his own identity, Shane must use the same combination of discipline, courage, and fighting ability to protect innocent people and take down a new generation of criminals.
