When Marcus Banks, Ethan's older brother, was studying strange energy fragments found in some ruins, he was responsible for opening a small rift between his world and the Unmaker's, bringing a monster into the human world. The monster was searching for a certain artifact Marcus was studying, and Marcus protected it, eventually trapping it within the artifact, which turned out to be a prison. However, in doing so, Ethan fell into the Abyss, a bridge between the two worlds, where he was stranded and fought for his life. He would have survived if not for finding the Void Gem, a purple gem that allowed him to merge with Nyx, an interdimensional being also stranded in the Abyss. Nyx helped Marcus survive, at the cost of partially erasing him from his mind. Eventually, he encountered the Rangers and helped them escape the Void. Throughout the season, Marcus must find a way to live in harmony with Nyx and share a single body, preventing them from erasing each other. This will ultimately lead to the creation of the Void Ranger, a new being. A team member who can access Nyx's abilities and is not exclusive to just one, but to both.
