After Darkrai's memories of his past life are restored by the latent effects of the Shattering, he intends to plunge the world into darkness by incapacitating the Lake Guardians with nightmarish visions so he can steal the Time Gears—leaving the player and Cresselia to search within Azelf's mind for him and bring him back to his newer, kinder self before that, too is lost.
