Due to a frightening dream, Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase decide to return to Camp Half-Blood after a year, discovering that Thalia's tree has been poisoned and with it the protection of the camp has been damaged, leaving the campers vulnerable to monster attacks. After Chiron is removed for being the main suspect, the protagonists need to look for a mystical artifact capable of healing the tree.
