Owlman is a 2022 American superhero film based on the DC Comics Supervillain of the same name. Written by Steven Spielberg and co-produced by RatPac-Dune Entertainment, it is intended to be the first film in a DC Comics shared Villains Universe. Directed by Sam Raimi, the film stars Gustaf Skarsgård in the title role, alongside Gemma Arterton, Lucas Till, Zachary Quinto, Chris Hemsworth, and Bruce Willis. The film was released theatrically on April 21st 2021, a few months before the Swamp Thing (set in the DC Extended Universe). Owlman was a box-office bomb, grossing $241 against a budget of $156 million, and lost over $80 million, unlike The Swamp Thing, which was a financial box-office success and performed far above expectations. The film was widely praised for Skarsgård's performance, direction, action sequences, dark tone, musical score, story, cinematography, themes, and emotional depth, with many considering it one of greatest superhero films ever made. A sequel is in development.
