Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the shogun of Ōnin era Japan convinces his younger brother Yoshimi to become his successor in lieu of being of a monk. A year later, Yoshimasa's wife Hino Tomiko bears a child, whose birth commences a civil war that spans an entire decade.
