The story is set in Charleston, USA, 15 years after the Civil War and the abolition of slavery. Charlotte, a 23-year-old black woman, is trying to find her place in the new world. She dreams of a career as a writer, but her family forces her to marry a 43-year-old, cold and indifferent widower, Edward Haskell, to secure a better life. Charlotte feels trapped in her marriage, and her dreams are stifled. She sneaks out of the house at night, seeking freedom in the richer neighborhoods, where she accidentally spots a young man, Anthony - the son of a dead soldier, who inherited a fortune, but instead of squandering it, decided to help the poor. Charlotte begins to follow him, and in time their paths merge. They begin conversations, and their relationship turns into love. Anthony, though initially wary, falls in love with Charlotte, recognizing her talent and courage. Their relationship becomes an inspiration for Charlotte to write a novel about love that overcomes social and racial barriers. However, their affection is threatened by Charlotte's marriage, Edward's controlling behavior and the difficulties of racial and social differences. Charlotte and Anthony's love becomes not only a personal escape, but also a catalyst for her creativity and struggle for freedom.
