Catherine Morland, seventeen and raised in rural Wiltshire on true crime podcasts and Gothic fiction, is invited to stay with the wealthy, strange Tilney family at Northanger, their renovated country estate. She is convinced — not entirely without evidence — that the family patriarch, General Tilney, is hiding something terrible about his late wife. Henry Tilney, his witty, infuriating younger son, keeps gently correcting her theories, which would be more useful if he were also being entirely honest about his own family.
