She arrived in the city with someone else's name and someone else's money. The body in the hotel room was the first thing that was truly hers. Set in contemporary Los Angeles, Night Carnation is a neo-noir thriller with the visual language and moral ambiguity of classic noir but resolutely contemporary psychology. Vera Cruz, 25, arrives in Los Angeles with a stolen identity, a significant amount of cash whose origins she has partially chosen not to investigate, and the specific plan of someone who has been planning for years without having finalized the destination. Within forty-eight hours of arriving, she discovers the body of a man in the hotel room adjacent to hers — a man who, it becomes clear, knew her real name, which nobody in this city is supposed to know. The film follows Vera across four days as she simultaneously investigates what happened to the dead man, manages the various forces now converging on her, falls into a complicated entanglement with Leo, a private investigator she initially tries to manipulate and who refuses to be manipulated in ways she didn't plan for, and reckons with the question that noir always finally asks: whether the crime she is running from is what she did or who she is. Shot entirely at night. Every frame is a choice. Act One — The Arrival Vera checks in. The body is discovered. The first forty-eight hours. The city and the night establish themselves as active presences. Act Two — The Investigation Vera investigating what the dead man knew while being investigated herself. Leo's shifting allegiance. Victor's first appearance. Act Three — The Name Vera's real name is spoken aloud. Everything that follows is the consequence of that moment.
