Master Splinter is the wise, mutated rat sensei and adoptive father of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, teaching them ninjutsu from his home in the sewers. His origin varies by series, but he is often depicted as either the pet rat of ninja master Hamato Yoshi (who he learned from) or as Hamato Yoshi himself, mutated into a rat by mutagen ooze. He is a calm, intelligent, and fiercely protective mentor, guiding the turtles in their fight against evil, particularly the Foot Clan and Shredder.
