Vera Mitchell is the invisible architect behind Nexus, the most exclusive and secretive club in Manhattan — a place where the city's most powerful people come to indulge desires they cannot risk in public. Vera doesn't do drugs, doesn't serve alcohol, doesn't facilitate anything explicitly illegal. She simply creates a space where people become themselves when no one is watching, and she remembers every word, every gesture, every compromising moment. A venture capitalist's affair with his business partner. A judge's private kink. A politician's gambling addiction. A CEO's obsession with someone half their age. Vera keeps meticulous records — not for blackmail, but for something more insidious: leverage she will spend years to deploy. When the police find the body of a client in the Hudson, Vera becomes the centre of an investigation she orchestrates as carefully as she orchestrates everything else. Detective Sarah Chen, assigned to the case, is young, talented, and represents the one element Vera didn't account for: genuine moral certainty. As Sarah closes in on the truth, Vera must decide whether to eliminate the threat or adapt her long game to accommodate it.
