Head of the Shinchōgumi (Tokugawa Shogunate guard organization). His wife was Mitsu, Shigekazu Kentaro's older sister, thus making him a brother-in-law of Shigekazu Kentaro. Formerly named Yamanaka Rintaro, he became an adopted son of Katsujirō (Shigekazu's father) and changed his name to Shigekazu Rintarō before his marriage to Katsujirō's daughter Mitsu in 1846.
