Through lies & promises of the shogun, Ishii now wants to become a daimyo. His hunger for social status leads to lose sight of his goals for the Shinsengumi. Ishii later retired and promoted Naoki as the new commander of the Shinsengumi. Later on, Ishii is mortally wounded in a revenge assassination attempt. Ken becomes particularly angry & blames himself for Ishii's death because he was too weak from his TB to protect him, which causes Ken to drink ochimizu in order to take revenge for Ishii. Ken acomplishes his revenge.
