Maxwell "Max" Howard III is the father of Martin, ex father in-law of Denise and the grandfather of Lily, Christopher and Mia. He is the owner and founder of the Hillard Country Club. Max is shown to have a genuine disdain towards Denise, but a genuine love and affection for his son and grandchildren. He is also fascinated by Stacey who works as an intern at Martin's law firm and suggests that Martin should start dating her soon after the divorce. At Martin's birthday dinner party at the country club, Max is furious when he found out that Mr. Penrose was just Denise in disguise the whole time. He later gives Denise a heated lecture in his office about how she was very irresponsible and what she did was disgusting. So Max permanently bans Denise from his country club.
