It is later revealed that the whole murders was a part of a bigger plan. Someone's been spying on Lucian this whole time and Gaskell was committing the murders for this mysterious figure, who knows about Lucian's presence and interference and thus sent Gaskell and his lackeys to take care of him. This mystery figure was only known as "The Man with Red Eyes" and is set to be the main villain of the upcoming season 3.
