Jason Voorhees is the iconic, hulking killer of the Friday the 13th series—an unstoppable force of vengeance born from tragedy and transformed into myth. Recognizable by his hockey mask, machete, and imposing silence, Jason is one of horror’s most enduring and feared figures. His story begins as a mentally disabled, physically deformed child who supposedly drowned in Crystal Lake in 1957 due to the negligence of camp counselors. His mother, Pamela Voorhees, driven mad with grief, began a killing spree in 1980 to prevent the camp from reopening. After she was decapitated by a survivor, Jason—somehow alive—emerged from hiding and took up his mother’s bloody mission. Over time, Jason evolved from a backwoods survivalist into something far more inhuman and unstoppable. After dying multiple times, he was eventually resurrected as an undead killing machine, immune to pain and nearly impossible to kill. Jason rarely speaks, if ever, and instead communicates through violent action. His motivations are rooted in protecting Crystal Lake, punishing intruders—particularly reckless teenagers—whom he sees as responsible for his death and his mother’s. Despite being portrayed as a monster, he’s driven by a twisted, tragic loyalty to his mother and the site of his trauma.
