Samus Aran, an orphaned bounty-hunter who was raised by the Chozo after the murder of her parents in a space colony, is called to the planet Zebes where she must retrieve a Metroid sample and navigate her way through a series of deadly underground chambers. Meanwhile, the violent space dragon Kraid and the notorious parasite queen Mother Brain are lurking in the darkness, waiting to strike.
